Native Egyptian Karim Nagi will present a dynamic overview of how drumming, music and dance are essential in Arab culture. He explains the similarities and differences between the 23 Arab countries that are distributed from Africa to Asia. Several instruments will be performed, including the Riqq, Tabla, Duff, Sagat, Buzuq and vocals. Various folk dance forms will be demonstrated, including Tahteeb and Dabka.
The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate the rich and exciting performance arts of the Arab world, in contrast to the political strife and war that is usually depicted in the media. These performing arts vividly illustrate philosophies and attitudes of the audiences and practitioners of this part of the world. This information is coming from an active practitioner of the arts, who uses music and dance beyond simple entertainment, but rather as tool for greater understanding.
